How to install trellis to a fence or wall

People love using trellis because it has many uses and is adaptable. It can make a fence taller, improving privacy and adding to the overall look of the garden. It's also great for hiding ugly parts of the yard or dividing sections. Plus, it provides a structure for plants to climb. If you're wondering how to install trellis, here are some handy tips.

Installing Trellis in Front of a Wall or Fence

1)When installing trellis in front of a wall or fence, you will need to leave some space in between if you want plants to grow behind it. To provide this space, you should mount the trellis to wooden battens, such as 50x50mm timber posts, which should be spaced out roughly 60cm apart. Start by fixing the battens to the wall/fence using screws and wall plugs and then use galvanised nails to install the trellis to the battens. Then you can plant your climbers below and watch them grow!

Installing Trellis On Top of A Fence

Step 1

You may then want to paint or stain the trellis so that it matches the fence colour and preserves the wood.

Step 2

If you adding trellis to the top of a fence panel you should have left your self enough space at the top of the posts. Attach the U bracket to the inside of the timber post about midway between the top and bottom of the trellis with screws preferably 35mm screws.

(If you don't have high enough posts and need to extend them you can do this by extending the existing posts- if you do not know how to extend post please our other blog- How to extend your posts.)

Step 3

Slot you trellis in place through the brackets and screw through the bracket and into the trellis.

Step 4

If you have timber posts you will use our 32mm fence clips to add on to the side of the post for the trellis to slot into to keep secure.

If you have concrete posts you can simply to just slot the trellis into the slot on the concrete post. However, if you want the trellis to be more secure you can screw through the bottom of the trellis into the top of the fence panel this will keep it just that bit more secure.
