Roofing battens, also called roofing laths, are used to provide the fixing point for roofing materials such as shingles or tiles and the spacing of the battens will depend on the type of roofing material, applied horizontally. They also help to support imposed loads caused by snow and wind, during construction, and they may even provide a foothold during installation, although we would only recommend doing this where the batten is directly over a rafter.
